SUZANNE CERNY

 JAZZ ART IMAGES

updated March 2008

Suzanne Cerny has been painting jazz musicians since 1986, having begun to sketch the Vince Wallace Quartet at the Sea Gull Bar in Mendocino, CA.  Later she was a member of the Jazz Hall Club in Santa Barbara, California.  Over a three year period, Suzanne sketched the musicians live during performance. She called her gig Drawing in the Dark.  She completed about 200 such drawings and was written up in the Santa Barbara Independent several times during the three years of continuing jazz performances at the small jazz  club on Victoria St. The wonderful jazz performers who drove from L.A. for the evenings of incredible original jazz music ought to be assembled into a book by the club owner, and I would contribute a lot of drawings as well as photos.

The musicians came from New York, Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, Mississippi as well as England, Japan, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Brazil. Suzanne was able to speak with the performers after hours and have the small pieces signed by the artists. She reminisces that the performers used to look around at the walls of her work and see themselves and their friends posted there while they were paused during the solos.

From 2001-2005, Suzanne sketched in clubs in Tucson, Arizona. There she became friends with jazz pianist Larry Redhouse, of Navajo origin. Larry also contributes to traditional Navajo performance, along with other Redhouse musicians, and they work various contemporary and traditional instruments.

For prices of individual works please contact the artist.  Most of the 11 x 8.5 pieces need to be printed in Giclee on canvas or watercolor paper and shipped rolled up in small mailing tubes. The prices for the Giclees are very reasonable and they have a distinctive appearance, difficult to tell from the originals. The Giclees that I have printed on canvas have deep beautiful colors and they also have a coating which gives them depth and beauty and is completely impermeable to water damage.
